Cardiff writer publishes new book on women in comedy

Cardiff-based writer Gwenno Dafydd spent two decades researching and writing about female comedy and can now finally see her book Stand Up and Sock It to Them Sister on shelves.

Gwenno, who lives in Pontconna, started thinking about the book when she studied a Masters degree in Women’s Studies at the University of Cardiff in 1994.

Published by Parthian Books, Stand Up and Sock It to Them Sister asks “why women chose comedy and what they have to sacrifice to make it.”

It “looks at the genesis of female comedy from the time of music hall and supper clubs through to the excitement and challenge of the international world of stand-up from Edinburgh to Cape Town to Mumbai to New York and Los Angeles before finally returning to the comedy clubs of London.”

Gwenno has interviewed over seventy comics for the book, including Joan Rivers and Amy Schumer, who she’s pictured with below.

You can buy Stand Up and Sock It to Them Sister for £11.99 via Parthian or pick it up in Waterstones.

Keep an eye on Cardiff Comedy Hub for a longer interview with Gwenno soon.
